In the inaugural season of the Indian Premier League, Chennai Super Kings was bought by India Cements for $91 million. During that period, Narayanaswami Srinivasan was the owner of the team and the company and the deal was signed for ten years. But, in 2014, Chennai Super Kings Cricket Limited took over the team’s ownership. The CEO of the company, Kasi Viswanathan took over the responsibilities.

2008 IPL Season

In the 2008 IPL Season, Chennai Super Kings finished as the Runners-up as they lost the finals against Rajasthan Royals in the last ball and by just a margin of 3 wickets. Despite the heartbreak, they performed well in the whole season as they won 8 games out of the 14 that they played in the league stage. Suresh Raina was the highest run-scorer for the team whereas, in the bowling line-up, everyone contributed well to take their team into the Finals of the 2008 IPL Season.

2009 IPL Season

In the 2009 IPL Season, Chennai Super Kings played even better than the previous season but still didn’t manage to get their hands on the IPL title. They played well during the league stage as they finished at the second position by winning 8 matches in the 14 matches that they played. However, the team lost 5 matches too but they managed to make it to the playoffs. Matthew Hayden was again the leading run-scorer for them and even won the orange cap. In the bowling department, everyone contributed well to make it to the playoffs.

2010 IPL Season

The 2010 IPL season was the most successful season for the Chennai Super Kings as they finally won the IPL title in the third attempt. They finished well during the league stage as they made it to the top three in the points table and qualified for the playoffs. In the 14 matches that they played, they won 7 out of them and lost the other 7 matches. In the finals, they defeated Mumbai Indians by 22 runs and won their maiden IPL title. Suresh Raina was the top scorer for them in that season.

2011 IPL Season

In the 2011 IPL Season, Chennai Super Kings became the first team in the history of the Indian Premier League to defend their title. IPL 2011 saw the proper domination of the Chennai Super Kings as in the league stage, they won 9 games out of the 14 that they played. They finished at the first position in the points table and won the finals against Royal Challengers Bangalore by 58 runs. Michael Hussey was the top scorer for them in that season and R Ashwin was the highest wicket-taker for them.

2012 IPL Season

In the 2012 IPL Season, Chennai Super Kings were so close to making history as if they would have won the IPL, then they would have become the first team to win the IPL title thrice in three consecutive years. However, they played well in that season but failed to win the IPL finals as they lost to Kolkata Knight Riders. In the league stage, they played 16 matches and won 8 out of them which led them to finish at the fourth position and they managed to make it to the playoffs.

2013 IPL Season

The IPL 2013 season came as another heartbreak for the Chennai Super Kings as they again failed to win the title even after reaching the finals for the fourth time in the last four seasons. In the season they played well throughout the year as they finished at the first spot in the points table. In the 16 games that they played, they won 11 games and lost just 5 out of it. Michael Hussey was the top scorer for them and DJ Bravo was the highest wicket-taker.

2014 IPL Season

The 2014 IPL season saw two finalists in which there were no Chennai Super Kings for the first time in the last four years. Chennai Super Kings again made it to the playoffs as during the league stage phase they played 14 games and they managed to win 9 games and lost 5 of them. With this, they managed to make it to the playoffs but lost in Qualifier 2 against Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) and hence were knocked out of the tournament. Dwayne Smith was the leading run-scorer for them.

2015 IPL Season

In the 2015 IPL season, Chennai Super Kings suffered another heartbreak as they managed to make it to the playoffs but lost in the finals against Mumbai Indians. Despite playing well in the whole season, they didn’t get their hands on the IPL title. In the league stage, they played 14 matches in which they managed to win 9 of them and they lost 5 matches but still managed to be at the top of the points table. Brendon McCullum was the leading run-scorer for them in that season.

2018 IPL Season

After being banned for two IPL seasons, Chennai Super Kings made a comeback to the Indian Premier League in the 2018 season and it was a dream comeback as they won the IPL title for the third time. During the league stage, they played 14 matches and won 9 out of them and lost 5 of them and finished the league stage at the second position in the points table. In the finals, they managed to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad comprehensively and Ambati Rayudu was the top scorer for them.

2019 IPL Season

In the IPL 2019 season, the two most successful franchises of the Indian Premier League faced each other in the Finals and it was Mumbai Indians who managed to beat Chennai Super Kings there. Chennai Super Kings performed well in the whole season and were on the verge of defending their trophy for the second time. In the league stage, they played 14 matches and won 9 matches out of it. But in the finals, Mumbai Indians got the better of them and they lost the finals by 1 run. MS Dhoni was the highest run-scorer for them in the season.

2020 IPL Season

The IPL 2020 season was the most disappointing season for the Chennai Super Kings as for the first time in the 11 seasons they played, they failed to make it to the playoffs as in the league stage, they just won 6 matches out of the 14 matches that they played and hence were played at the seventh position in the points table. During the season, Faf Du Plessis was the highest run-scorer for them and in the bowling department, Sam Curran was the lone performer for them.

2021 IPL Season

The IPL 2021 season was a perfect comeback for the Chennai Super Kings after a dismal performance in the previous season IPL 2021, they won the IPL title for the fourth time and became the second most successful franchise of the Indian Premier League. They dominated every team during the league stage as they won 9 matches out of the 14 matches that they played. In the Finals, they managed to beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 27 runs and won the title. Ruturaj Gaikwad won the Orange cap and in the bowling department, Shardul Thakur was the leading wicket-taker for them.

2022 IPL Season

After winning the IPL Season 2021, Chennai Super Kings failed to replicate their performance as in the auction, the management wasn’t able to perform well. They had to let go of their main players like Faf du Plessis, Shardul Thakur, and many more which impacted their game a lot. Furthermore, Ravindra Jadeja was appointed as the captain for the season but was replaced by MS Dhoni because of his poor performance. Chennai Super Kings finally finished at the ninth position in the points table.
