With the fifteenth season of the Indian Premier League, the BCCI introduced two new teams in the Indian Premier League to make this league more powerful, the one who would make enough money for the board and would entertain the audiences at their home. Moreover, this time, the IPL was played in India as in the last two years, Covid-19 had a big impact on the league. Apart from all this, the two new teams that were introduced were Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans. And in the first season, both the teams were able to make a mark as Lucknow Super Giants finished in the fourth position, and on the other hand, and Gujarat Titans went on to win the IPL. Both the teams had some of the best players and hence they were able to give themselves a chance to go hard at the other teams.
With the end of IPL 2021, BCCI looked to increase the number of teams in the Indian Premier League, and hence different investors made bids for the new teams. Regarding this, the RPSG Group of Sanjiv Goenka made the highest bid for the Lucknow team and it was also the highest bid made by any owner in the history of the Indian Premier League. RPSG made a bid of 7090 crores (over 932 million USD) for the Lucknow team. There were other investors too, like Jindal Steel, Torrent Pharma, Hindustan Times Media, and many more. The owners of the IPL teams have been becoming wealthier and more politically influential by the year, with the RPSG group being a prime example.
The RP-Sanjiv Goenka Group is an Indian multinational conglomerate and has been handling the businesses like IT-enabled services, FMCG, media, Power, Carbon Black and many more out there with them. Currently, the company’s asset-based value is around US$6 billion, and the revenue-based value is US$4 billion. The headquarters of the company is located in Kolkata and helps them to manage all their workload.
Earlier, the owner of the company was associated with the Indian Premier League in 2016 and 2017 when he owned the team named Rising Pune Supergiants. MS Dhoni was the captain of the team for the 2016 season, and then Steve Smith was handed the captaincy duties in the 2017 season. They went to the finals of the 2017 season but lost the match by just 1 run.
