Reports | Belgium Hockey team being investigated for betting
World Champions Belgium is under investigation for their alleged involvement in betting on their own matches. A report from the Belgian media has emerged stating that as many as 20 matches played since 2015 are being investigated and the Belgian Hockey Association has promised full cooperation.
The World Cup winners are being investigated for its alleged involvement in betting on their own matches. As many as 20 matches starting from the year 2015 to the recently concluded Hockey World Cup in Odisha are being investigated. The Belgian Hockey Association was approached by the gambling committee, since then the Gaming Commission has opened an investigation into the matter, Sporza.be reported.
"We are at the stage when the Gaming Commission gathers information, which is not a police investigation, contrary to what is in the paper," the website quoted Denis Van Damme, Director of Marketing and Communication with the association, reported TOI.
While the Federation of International Hockey(FIH) responding to TOI has assured that full cooperation from the Belgian Hockey Association will be provided on the investigation. It also asserted that the integrity of all the competitions is prime to the institution.
"Based on these media reports, we have contacted the Belgian Hockey Association and have full confidence that they will handle this with full cooperation and transparency," said Nicolas Maingot, the FIH's Senior Communications Manager.
"As an overall principle – and unrelated to these reports – the integrity of competitions is of paramount importance for FIH, as the FIH Integrity Code confirms," he added.
