Reports | Aston Villa hoping to make shock move for Eric Dier in January
Newly promoted Premier League side Aston Villa are among the favourites to sign Tottenham star Eric Dier in the winter window. Villa have already spent over £130 million in summer following their promotion but have struggled to make an impact sitting 15th with 8 points in as many games.
Aston Villa owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens promised to loosen their pockets to sign new players and they delivered. The Lions signed Wesley Moraes, Tyrone Mings Douglas Luiz and a few others, with 12 new players joining for around £130 million. The Claret and blues are now weighing up on options that they could target in the next transfer window and Eric Dier has made the cut reports the Birmingham Live.
The report further added that apart from Villa, a number of clubs are after Dier’s signature including West Ham and Everton. Manchester United are also looking to bolster their midfield and have been linked with a move for the Englishman in the past. The defensive midfielder signed for Tottenham in 2014 for a sum of £4 million and has gone onto make 210 appearances for Spurs. But, in recent months he has fallen down the pecking order with the club signing Tanguy Ndombele, Giovani Lo Celso and the emergence of Harry Winks.
Mauricio Pochettino has trusted Winks more this season than Dier which has seen the latter midfielder make only three appearances. With Dier struggling for game time at the North London club, the Birmingham Live reports that he could leave in January in search for more playtime to make the cut for the 2020 Euro. Villa are already well-stocked in the middle of the park with Jack Grealish, John McGinn, Marvelous Nakamba, Douglas Luiz, Conor Hourihane and Henri Lansbury offering a myriad of options.
