After suffering back-to-back defeats against Mohun Bagan and Bengaluru FC, Spanish coach Manuel Retamero made four changes to Aizawl’s starting XI bringing in Zothanmawia for injured goalkeeper Soram Porei and Lalrinpuia, Albert Zohmingmawia and Yuta Kinowaki.
On the other hand, DSK Shivajians coach Derrick Pereira made an unexpected change to his XI that had earned a goal less draw against Sporting Club de Goa last week, by bringing in Manipuri midfielder Milan Singh for veteran striker Mohammed Rafi.
The home team dominated the opening exchanges with Mizoram Premier League (MPL) 2015-16 Best Player Lalrinpuia and Alfred Kemah Jaryan leading the attack. The pressure from Aizawl finally found its way into the goal in the 18th minute through Liberian striker Alfred Jaryan. A mistake in the defence of DSK opened up an easy opportunity for the striker and he coolly slotted it past Subrata Paul in the goal to open the home team’s account.
After going ahead, Aizawl chose to continue their attacking play and almost doubled their scoring, only to see Indian International Subrata Paul saving his team from going further behind. With just minutes to go for the half-time break, Japanese defender Yuta Kinowaki found the net to double the lead for the home team. With 54% possession in half, the home team dominated the game with DSK opting to play a defensive game.
Trailing 2-0, DSK Shivajians changed their formation from a defensive 4-5-1 to 4-4-2 to bring more potency to their attack. Derrick Pereira also threw striker Mohammed Rafi into the mix in the 58th minute to find a way back into the match with the Aizawl defence holding tight. Aizawl’s 4-5-1 formation gave them more control in the midfield and they dominated possession to throttle DSK’s plans of a comeback. The away team never looked a threat in the game as Aizawl followed their plan of a possession game to the dot to register their first win and first points of the I-League.
