Federer says he has surprised himself in a big way
Seven-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer has said that he is amazed to be still in the fray for the title after his quarter-final win against Marin Cilic on Wednesday. Federer completed a stunning comeback from two sets down to win the match 6-7, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 and reach the semi-final.
Federer came into this year’s Wimbledon looking for an eighth title at the All England Club, but a back injury that kept him out of the French Open had been a cause for concern. He displayed sublime class to breeze past his opponents in the first three rounds, but Marin Cilic seemed ready to upset the 17-time Grand Slam champion. Federer showed nerves of steel though, to win the match and later admitted that he had surprised himself.
“I was very worried coming here. I think it was huge for me to play the seven matches I did in Halle and Stuttgart. They served me very well. They gave me so much information to see what I could do, what I couldn't do, how I could play, how I couldn't play.
“Then knowing that I had a week in between, if I get through the first week here at Wimbledon, who knows. Next thing you know, you're in the semis. You're really deep into the tournament. Yes, I did surprise myself, in quite a big way actually," SuperSport reported him as saying.
His win over the Croatian took his Grand Slam match win tally to 307, an all-time record. Federer also spoke about his amazing comeback and said it was huge.
“I've had some good comebacks. This one is definitely huge because it's Centre Court at Wimbledon. Still gives me the chance to win the tournament.
"This is a big one. Probably not the biggest, but a big one,” reported SuperSport.
Federer had to save match points on two different occasions, before turning on the screws and running away with the match in the fifth set. Cilic admitted it was a mental battle and that Federer served exquisitely.

"I knew that he's not going to back off when we go in the fifth set. It's also a mental battle where you don't want to let any of the points go on the other side without giving full effort.
“I think that he was serving pretty well in the fifth set. That was definitely a tough part. What to say Just on few occasions, he made couple of great returns, very short, very low, with his slices. I was in difficult situations. I managed to hit pretty good shots, but he ended up hitting great passes. Nothing I could do," SuperSport reported the 2014 US Open Champion as saying.
