VIDEO | Yuzvendra Chahal assures umpire he’s out; official refuses to believe him
There was a time in cricket when walking away voluntarily upon getting dismissed despise umpire’s denial was considered gentlemanly. Now, whether it be for the umpire’s redundancy on the field or repeated dishonesty by players, there seem to be trust issues as Yuzvendra Chahal witnessed today.
The Indian team finally saw something on the fourth ODI in Mohali against Australia that has been evading them for some time now - an opening stand. After flopping in a streak, the duo of Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan finally managed to click with a whopping 193-run stand right at the top. After Rohit was sent back on 95 runs, Dhawan kept the runs ticking before he fell at 143.
India needed a steady flow of runs thereafter but none could provide that, with KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, and Kedar Jadhav, none going big. Consequently, the prediction of the target being somewhere at 370 at one point, looked significantly threatened all of a sudden. India saw themselves reaching only 344 runs after 49 overs as Bhuvneshwar Kumar was sent back to the
Shankar was India’s last hope and after hitting a maximum on the very first ball of Pat Cummins, the all-rounder fell in the fourth ball. Next came Yuzvendra Chahal and was asked to hit from the very first ball. However, all the wrist spinner could do was return a catch to Cummins against his short if length slow delivery.
The spinner was very sure of his dismissal and didn’t waste a second before turning back and walking to the pavilion. However, the umpire had his reservations and despite seeing the batsman confident about it decided to call him back and go upstairs. The replays showed Chahal was right for the catch was crystal clear.
