Abhinav Bindra : I could have very easily given up, but I fought through
At Rio, Abhinav Bindra will be participating in his fifth Olympics, and it has been a long and difficult journey so far. The 33-year-old, who won India's first individual Olympic gold medal back in 2008, could have easily given up on the sport a long time back, but said he decided to stay and fight.
“It would have been easy for me to leave on a high,” Bindra was quoted as saying by the Hindu.
Bindra, who has been appointed as the goodwill ambassador by the Indian Olympic Association for the Rio Games, has faced a lot of heartbreaks over the years, along with the accolades he has gathered. Back in the 2000 Olympics, he missed out on the final by a single point. Four years later, he missed out on a medal at Athens due to a “bouncy floor”.
“There have been several challenges and I could have very easily given up. I am so proud of the fact that I have fought through hopeless situations to come to a point where I feel good,” Bindra told the Hindu.
The Uttarakhand-born shooter has already announced that this will be his last Olympics, and he will be hoping to sign off in style. With the likes of Bindra in the ranks, shooting remains India's best hope of winning a gold at Rio.
