PKL 2019 | My performance led to Puneri Paltan getting me back, says Nitin Tomar
After leaving his team midway in season 6 due to an injury Nitin Tomar has said that his performance was the key for him to be back with Puneri Paltan this season as well. Tomar, who had 100 points in 11 matches in the previous edition, also spoke about Pune’s new coach Anup Kumar.
After failing to make the playoffs last season Puneri Paltan hope to get back to winning ways this season. As a result of which they had initially, decided not to retain any players before the auctions. However, at the auctions, the newly-appointed coach Anup Kumar decided to bring in both Nitin Tomar and Girish Ernak for Rs 1.20 crore and Rs 33 lakhs respectively.
Tomar was the costliest buy in season 5 but he failed to make an impression for UP Yoddha, he was then bought by Puneri Palant last season for 1.15 crore in season 6. The Pune-based franchise has reimposed their faith in Tomar and he also seemed positive on his return to the team.
“The management know the sport, they know the type of players required and go for them. My preparation, performance led to the team getting me back. I will try to repay their faith in me by working along with the coach to win the title,” Tomar told Sportstar.
Apart from the players, there was a change in leadership as well. The Pune-based franchise decided to let go of Ashan Kumar Sangwan and brought in former India skipper Anup Kumar at the helm. Tomar was a part of 2016 World Cup-winning side under Anup.
“I was a junior in the squad, he was the leader. Anup pointed out our errors and also made us aware of he expected from us,” the Pune raider explained.
The only player to attract a higher bid at the auctions in April than the 24-year-old was last year's debutant Siddharth Desai. There have been a surge of new faces in Pro Kabaddi League, every franchise is trying to bring new talent and some are quite successful as well. The new and young lot have made an impression on audiences as well.
“When the young players got into Pro Kabaddi, they are determined to impress people watching and go all out to make a mark from the start. Recognition follows when they begin playing with competent sides,” Tomar concluded.
