Haryana Steelers have named senior defender Dharmaraj Cheralathan their skipper for the upcoming season of the Pro Kabaddi League which will begin from July 20 this year. Earlier this year, they had appointed Rakesh Kumar as the new coach of the team ahead of the auctions in April.

With the league all set to begin from July 20 this year, Haryana Steelers have appointed experienced right corner defender Dharmaraj Cheralathan as their skipper.  With Rakesh Kumar at the helm in the side, the right corner will be take up the leadership duties of the side which was not up to the mark at all in the last edition of the league in Zone A.

"I've played with him for a longtime and he's a proven leader. A smart defender who doesn't give any chance to a raider. I have total confidence in him leading the Steelers,” Rakesh Kumar was quoted as saying by the Twitter handle of the Steelers.

"There's an array of fine raiders in the country but we need equally competitive defenders to take them down and any team with a stronger defense, has a better chance of winning the league."

Cheralathan has been a part of the league since its inception and was at the right corner of the U Mumba team in the previous season in which the Fazel Atrachali-led side entered the playoffs. Haryana was led by Surender Nada in the first game but as he was injured after the first game, raider Monu Goyat took up the captaincy of the side last season.
