PKL 2019 | Awards like the Arjuna push sportspersons further, says Ajay Thakur
Ajay Thakur has mentioned that the Arjuna Award will motivate him to do well in his career in the future. He was nominated for the prestigious award on Saturday but according to the Tamil Thalaivas' skipper, he had absolutely no idea at all during the game against Bengaluru Bulls.
Ajay Thakur played last night as Tamil Thalaivas' captain against Bengaluru Bulls in Tamil’s seventh match of the season. Thalaivas lost 21-32 in a forgettable encounter. Apart from playing in the PKL for Bengaluru Bulls and Tamil Thalaivas, Thakur has played for India for 15 years. He was nominated for prestigious Arjuna Award on Thursday but the didn’t know about the nomination as he was bound to play the match when the announcements happened. He got to know about this in the post-match press conference of the match when the journalist told him.
“Really? I had absolutely no idea at all,” Ajay reacted. "Awards like these... Awards like the Arjuna push us sportspersons further because from the very beginning every athlete has the dream to win it," Thakur was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
The already Padma Shri awardee Thakur has many medals to his name as he has played for India in Asian Kabaddi Championship, Kabaddi World Cup and Asain games to name a few.
“I was checking my phone since morning and continued till around 4 pm to know whether the names were announced but there was nothing regarding it. You are the ones to let me know about it." Ajay said.
“I have been playing for India since the last 15 years and kept yearning for it, thinking that one day I would be able to bag it. I still cannot believe my ears. I will go check right now. Some news this is!”
