PKL 2019 | Defence left a lot to be desired, believes Anup Kumar
Puneri Paltan coach Anup Kumar has said that the defence disappointed the team as they were able to score only eight points against Jaipur Pink Panthers last evening. The 25-33 defeat against Jaipur Pink Panthers was the fifth loss for the Paltan and they are currently at the bottom of the table.
Puneri Paltan failed to play like a unit in their match last night against Jaipur Pink Panthers. In the starting seven, Manjeet (4) and Nitin Tomar (3) were not able to perform well as they scored only seven raid points together. The raiding department’s grace was saved by Pankaj Mohite who came in as a substitute and finished the match with eight raid points. Hence their raiding unit and Panthers’ raiding unit scored 16 points each.
“The defence could have played better. The raiding unit was brilliant today. But the defence left a lot to be desired,” coach Anup Kumar said in the post-match press conference.
“Phenomenal performance. Nitin Tomar was good, Manjeet was good, Pankaj Mohite was outstanding. Overall, brilliant,” Anup said about the raiding unit’s performance.
It was Pune’s defence that disappointed them by doing hasty and unnecessary tackles. They were able to score only eight points while three of those came from skipper Surjeet Singh. Their former skipper Girish Ernak failed to open his account in the last game.
“We looked tentative in trying to attack their raiders. Given the quality that Nitin Rawal and Deepak Hooda possess, giving them a second chance is inviting trouble,” coach explained.
Pune made two substantial substitutes, Pankaj Mohite and Hadi Tajik and both of them performed well. Pankaj scored eight points whereas Hadi effected a Super Tackle. Seeing their performance there are chances that we could see more of Pune’s bench strength in action.
“We have a bench full of talented players. If our starters aren’t producing the desired results, it’s natural for us to look at our bench and see who can provide us with a bit of magic on the mat,” coach Anup concluded.
