PKL 2019 | Lot of credit for win goes to defence, says BC Ramesh
Bengal Warriors coach BC Ramesh has mentioned that the credit for the win against U Mumba in the last game goes to the team’s defence. Bengal’s right corner defender Baldev Singh has said that they had made proper planning before the game and managed to execute those on the mat as well.
In an exciting battle on Friday, Bengal Warriors managed to get the better of U Mumba 32-30. The match went all down to the wire and in spite of the poor show by the raiders, it was the defensive unit for the team that stood up to ensure a win for the Kolkata-based side. Right corner defender Baldev Singh was the top performer for the Warriors as he completed yet another High 5 in his PKL career. Bengal coach BC Ramesh also credited his defenders after the win.
“A lot of credit for the win goes to the defence today. The situation at the end of the match with about a minute and a half to play was that Maninder Singh was set to go in and raid. Even if he would get caught, we’d still have the lead and five men on the mat, so no chance of a bonus point for them,” Ramesh told reporters after the game.
“I knew Arjun Deshwal would come for the buzzer raid and told Jeeva to catch him because he’d have to come deep with only five defenders on court. So, that was the plan and it was successful.”
The raiders didn’t have a great day at the office and Prapanjan was the top performer for them with just six points while skipper Maninder Singh got five. Meanwhile, Maninder also praised the team’s defence for putting up a great show against Mumba. Apart from Baldev, Jeeva Kumar also had a good day as he scored four tackle points.
“Our defence performed very well today. Me and the other two raiders played a role, but the main reason behind our win is the defence, they played very well,” said Maninder.
At the right corner of the Bengal half, Baldev wreaked havoc against the Mumba raiders and collected five tackle points from eight attempts. It was his third High 5 of the season and he mentioned that there was a proper plan for the inexperienced Mumba raiding unit.
“We had planned for everything in detail before the game and continued to execute those plans in the game for today’s win,” Baldev said after the game.
