Thailand edged out Japan 37-33 after rallying late in a thrilling Group B league match of the Kabaddi World Cup 2016 to set up a semi-final clash against hosts India. Meanwhile, Bangladesh signed off with a thumping 67-26 win over Argentina in an inconsequential match.
Korea will meet Iran in Friday’s first semi-final.
Group B
Wednesday night’s match between Thailand and Japan could easily be described as the most fascinating and thrilling contest of this edition of the tournament. With a semi-final spot at stake, Thailand managed to get the better of Japan, but both teams showcased remarkable skills.
Despite Japan’s successful first all-out imposed on Thailand, they chose to play safe. Thailand rallied late, waiting until the 37th minute to gain the lead that they held on till the end.
The result placed Thailand level on points with Iran who had lost to Poland in their final league game. The Thais topped the group based on their better points average – 82 to Iran’s 71.
Group A
Bangladesh jumped to a 33-15 lead in the first half that included a fourth minute all-out. Sloppy defence and unnecessary advanced tackles didn’t help Argentina’s cause. Bangladesh finished third in the group after scoring 42 Raid points including eight all-outs. The South American country ended last.
