Real Madrid confirm that Luka Modric has signed contract extension until 2023
Real Madrid have confirmed that legendary midfielder Luka Modric has signed a contract extension with the club which will keep the Croatian midfielder at the Santiago Bernabeu for an additional year until 2023. The midfielder's old contract was set to expire this summer before he penned fresh terms.
Luka Modric joined Real Madrid from Tottenham for a £30 million transfer fee in the summer of 2012 but the Croatian initially struggled to impress under then-manager Jose Mourinho who decided against giving Modric the start in the majority of the matches in his first season. However, things changed after that as the Croatia international went on to become arguably one of the best midfielders in the world while cementing his status into the folklores of the Spanish club.
Modric has made 436 appearances for the club while scoring 31 goals and registering 73 assists across all competitions. The Ballon d’Or award winner has won a plethora of trophies for the Spanish side with 19 major honours to his name while featuring for the Los Blancos. The 36-year-old played a decisive role in Madrid’s quest to secure the La Liga crown, Champions League title and a Supercopa de Espana this season although his future at the club looked uncertain with his deal set to expire in the summer.
Madrid have confirmed that they have agreed on terms with Modric over a new deal which is set to keep the midfielder at the club until 2023. It is understood that the La Liga side will also consider extending Modric's contract through to 2024 if he can maintain the same exceptional standards next term.
