Manchester City confirms £42 million signing of Kalvin Phillips from Leeds
Manchester City have confirmed that they have completed the signing of midfielder Kalvin Phillips for a reported fee of £42 million with the former Leeds star signing a six-year deal at the club. Phillips was earmarked by City manager Pep Guardiola as the ideal signing to improve his midfield.
Kalvin Phillips has established himself as one of the finest defensive midfielders in the Premier League during his stint with Leeds. The England international has made 234 appearances for the Peacocks while scoring 14 goals and providing 13 assists across all competitions. The 26-year-old’s exceptional defensive prowess and passing ability had attracted attention from elsewhere and Manchester City has won the race for the Englishman’s signature.
The reigning English champions had aimed to replace the void left behind by long-term servant Fernandinho while also reinforcing their midfield options with the futures of Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, and Oleksandr Zinchenko looking to be uncertain. Negotiations between Leeds and the Manchester club were completed without any roadblocks as both clubs agreed to an initial fee of £42 million-plus add-ons with the midfielder penning a six-year deal with his new side.
