Tammy Abraham learnt from me, confesses Didier Drogba
Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has revealed that Blues star Tammy Abraham took inspiration and learnt by watching him play. The 21-year-old has had a fantastic start to life as the Blues’ new number nine scoring nine goals in just five Premier League starts, including a hattrick against Wolves.
Abraham, who was shipped out to Aston Villa last season, has enjoyed a fantastic start to life under Frank Lampard, starting three consecutive games under the new boss. Not only that, the 21-year-old striker has continued his run of form into the Premier League with seven goals in his last five appearances, including five in his last two games.
It has been a brilliant start for the young forward and Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has now revealed that the former youth star has taken inspiration from him. In an interview, Drogba went on to reveal that Abraham watched him and the other senior players play during his time at the academy, learning from what the Champions League winner did.
"Yeah, I've known him since he's been like this. These are kids we used to see, they used to come and watch us training, and I believe they learned a little bit of our skills, how we read the game. So, you know, we're not surprised because I also trained with them when I used to train with the reserve team. It was always a moment for me to give away some skills, some knowledge, and they learnt really fast, really quick. So once again, I'm not surprised with what I've seen with Abraham,” said Drogba reports Sky Sports.
Tammy Abraham isn’t the only youth star to take an active role in Chelsea’s first team this season, with Mason Mount, Fikayo Tomori and even Kurt Zouma getting a chance. Both Tomori and Mount, however, have been standout stars like Abraham, combining to score 4 goals so far in just under 4 first-team appearances. This has gotten a lot of praise from Lampard's former team-mate, with Drogba, who went on to add that he believes this method will eventually help Chelsea thrive.
"Being an ex-player from the club, it helps a lot because we've seen all these kids when we were training. So, you know, you have to give them a chance and when you do, they deliver.
