Napoli will be a tricky opponent, warns Ernesto Valverde
Barcelona head coach Ernesto Valverde has warned his team that Napoli will be a tricky opponent to overcome in the Champions League Round of 16. The draw took place on Monday and the Blaugrana have been matched against the Serie A giants with the first leg set to be played at the Stadio San Paolo.
In an interview with AS, Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde has warned his team about the danger Napoli can cause in the juicy round of 16 tie. The Catalans were drawn against the Neapolitans in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 draw on Monday. The first leg is set to be played at Stadio San Paolo on 25th February and the return leg at Nou Camp is scheduled on 18th March of next year.
Napoli have endured a tough season so far after falling far behind in the Serie A race as the club sits 8th with 21 points. They sacked Carlo Ancelotti last week following a 4-0 win over Genk on the last matchday in the Champions League and appointed Gennaro Gattuso as his successor. Valverde believes Barça will need to be at their sharpest if they are to progress to the quarter-finals, even though his side triumphed 4-0 in their most recent meeting in pre-season.
“Napoli are a dangerous team. Clearly, they're not going through their best moment. They've had a change of coach and they'll have to adapt bit by bit. We'll see how they are and how everyone is heading into February, but without a doubt, we'll have to prepare for the tie really well. It'll be a strong atmosphere, with a big stadium, one of those where the fans are very close. But that's fine. In that sense, we're used to playing in front of atmospheres of this kind and it'll be beautiful to experience everything in general around Napoli as a city,” said the former Athletic Bilbao coach to AS.
In the other results of the draw, Manchester City have been drawn against 13 time UCL winners Real Madrid. Current champions Liverpool will travel back to Wanda Metropolitano, where they were crowned the champions, as the Reds take on Los Rojiblancos. Bayern Munich will play Frank Lampard’s Chelsea and Thomas Tuchel’s PSG will take on his former club Borussia Dortmund. Juventus have been handed a fairly easy tie as they will face Olympique Lyon in the knockout stages.
