Presser Watch | Mauricio Pochettino, Pep Guardiola, Steve Bruce speak after Gameweek 3
Gameweek 3 is officially over and the managers are out in full flow for their post-match press conferences. There is a lot to say after a shock defeat for Tottenham, Manchester City handing Bournemouth yet another 3 goal margin defeat and one rather big win for Newcastle United and Steve Bruce.
Manchester City
In the end, a Sergio Aguero double was more than enough for Manchester City to surge past Arsenal and Leicester City into second place. However, Bournemouth were far from pushovers and gave Pep Guardiola a lot to think about in a game that tested both the player’s physical and mental state. This does give the Cityzens a boost going into their next few games, including fixtures against Norwich City and Watford.
“It was a tough game as always here. Big compliments to the players. Bournemouth set up so deep and they are strong with long balls with King, Wilson and Billing, with set-pieces and Cook’s throw-ins into the box. They are stronger than us, but the quality of our forward players won us the game,” revealed Guardiola to Manchester City’s official website.
Tottenham
The other finalists of the 2019 Champions League have not had the best start to the 2019/20 season and that has continued with a shocking 1-0 defeat to Newcastle United. The Magpies were surprisingly brilliant at one end and made the most of their chances at the other, to frustrate Mauricio Pochettino in his first defeat of the season. Tottenham have a lot of work to do going forward and the fact that they play Arsenal next weekend does not make their job any easier.
“I think it’s easy. We didn’t play well. We’re very disappointed about our performance and the result. We again conceded a cheap goal. They were well organised and compact and we didn’t breakthrough. We needed to be more aggressive with the ball. 80 per cent possession should have more chances,” said Pochettino to Football London.
Newcastle United
What a win for the Magpies and they hit back at all their critics in the best possible way, with a win against one of the best sides in Europe. They had their work cut out for them in both halves, but their defensive resilience combined with their hard-work offensively and terrible defending saw them get their first win of the season. However, Steve Bruce's job is far from over and with fixtures against Leicester City, Watford and then Liverpool, he needs to help his team keep their momentum going.
“I think that’s what the Premier League is. We’ve had a tough week so the one thing you have to do is respond in the right way and thankfully the players have done that. Of course, I think everyone’s drained but it wasn’t just the match, it was the cricket before! It had everyone on edge!” said Bruce to the Chronicle Live.
