AFG vs SA | Twitter reacts to Andile furthers Proteas collapse with comical game-like running glitch
How many times has one accidentally pressed the run button after playing a defensive shot in a cricket game and had to paid the price for it? Andile Phehlukwayo endured something similar at Sharjah on Wednesday, except he was batting against Afghanistan in a crucial stage of the historic ODI.
South Africa lost more than five wickets in the powerplay for the first time in ODI history, in their first ever bilateral encounter against Afghanistan. Poor shot selection and inability to read the bowlers allowed Fazalhaq Farooqi and Allah Ghazanfar to scalp three wickets each in their opening spell, reducing them to 36/6 ith four balls left until the fielding restrictions are lifted. However, just when the visitors thought the worst was behind them, they suddenly lost a seventh wicket to end the powerplay practically defeated.
Andile Phehlukwayo was up against rookie mystery-spinner Ghazanfar and attempted to defend a length delivery on the front foot. He missed the line of the delivery as the Kookaburra struck him on the pad and Ghazanfar immediately went up for an appeal alongside wicket-keeper Rahmanullah Gurbaaz. The umpire was still making his mind when something triggered Andile to take a couple of strides outside the crease in search of a run, even though he had no idea where the ball had gone. Unfortunately for him, the white rock was right there in the hands of Gulabdin Naib at first slip who flicked it at the stumps just in time to dispatch the all-rounder for a duck in comical fashion.
Twitterati could not believe the self-destructive route the Proteas were taking and made social media light up with discussions over the same.
Another worst way to get out!
