BGT 2024 | Jaiswal and Kohli light up Perth with centuries as India takes an uncatchable lead

India dominated the day with KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal sharing a 201-run partnership, with Jaiswal scoring 161, while Virat Kohli notched his 80th century. India declared at 480/6, leaving Australia in trouble at the close of play, having lost three wickets paving India’s way for a win.

‌Following an explosive display of batting on the previous day, India resumed their innings with overnight batters KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal leading the charge. Starting with a commanding lead, the pair propelled the scoreboard to 191/0 in 61 overs. The highlight of the morning unfolded in the very next over when Jaiswal reached a magnificent century off 205 balls, giving India a significant boost. However, Australia's breakthrough came soon after, as Mitchell Starc ended the formidable 201-run partnership by dismissing Rahul in the 63rd over. Devdutt Padikkal then joined Jaiswal at the crease, showing much more composure compared to his underwhelming performance in the first innings. The new partnership flourished, with the duo steering the score to 247/1 in 78 overs, extending India's lead to 293 runs. Despite taking the new ball, Australia’s frustrations mounted as the left-handed pair continued their dominance. By lunch, Jaiswal and Padikkal had taken the score to 275/1, stretching the lead to an imposing 321 runs.

The afternoon session began with a shock as Devdutt Padikkal was dismissed by Hazlewood on the first ball after lunch. However, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal continued to build India's innings, with Jaiswal bringing up a brilliant 150. The pair took the score to 312/2 in 93 overs, but Australia fought back as Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel fell cheaply, leaving India at 325/5 with a lead of 371 runs. With Washington Sundar and Kohli at the crease, India steadied, taking the score to 358/5 in 109 overs, leading by 404 runs at Tea, with Kohli on 40 off 74 balls.

 

Post-tea, the pitch showed signs of wear with cracks, allowing Nathan Lyon to assert control, but Kohli and Sundar kept the runs flowing, extending India’s lead to 430 with the score at 384/5. Kohli looked in excellent touch, reaching fifty off 94 balls, while Sundar supported him well, with the duo adding 89 runs to take India to 406/5. Lyon finally struck, dismissing Sundar and bringing Nitish Kumar Reddy to the crease.The Andhra batter looked in great form, quickly scoring 37 off 26 balls, displaying his attacking style. However, the most significant moment came when Virat Kohli reached his century off 143 deliveries, sending the crowd into a frenzy. As Kohli celebrated his milestone, Indian captain Jasprit Bumrah, from the stands, signalled for the declaration, prompting the Indian players to walk back with the score at 487/6, leading by 534 runs.Australia's second innings faltered right from the start, with Nathan McSweeney falling to Bumrah in the opening over. The struggles continued as Pat Cummins was dismissed shortly after, leaving Australia at a precarious 12/2 after just four overs. The Indian contingent sensed victory as Marnus Labuschagne was also sent packing, leaving Australia at 12/3, requiring 522 runs to win. With Labuschagne's wicket, the umpires called off the day, and the Indian team walked off the field, visibly content with their dominant position.
