GT vs KKR | Rain in Ahmedabad ends Gujarat's playoff hopes while Knight Riders secure top-two spot
No play was possible at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Monday after a thunderstorm and incessant showers forced the match to be abandoned without even the toss taking place. The result in their last home game of the season means Gujarat Titans have officially been eliminated from playoff contention.
Initially, only the toss was slightly delayed after frequent lightning and strong winds had rendered the floodlights inoperable before the heavens opened ahead of the game's scheduled start time. A drizzle soon gave way to heavy showers and albeit there were a couple of quiet spells in between, the rainless windows were never enough to prepare the ground and allow play to begin. Eventually, skippers Shubman Gill and Shreyas Iyer shook hands nearly half an hour before the cutoff time of 10:56 PM IST for a five-over encounter.
Gujarat Titans have thus been mathematically eliminated with a game remaining, against Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi Stadium on May 16. The franchise had topped the table in both the previous seasons, going all the way in 2022 before being trumped by Chennai Super Kings last year. The side had to endure the loss of skipper Hardik Pandya to Mumbai Indians in 2024 and failed to rediscover the balance that had made it a force to be reckoned with, managing just five victories in their 13 fixtures so far.
Kolkata Knight Riders, meanwhile, remain the only team to have qualified for the playoffs and are now guaranteed to end in the top two which ensures them a place in Qualifier 2, should they fail to secure a final berth in Qualifier 1. The Purple Army is slated to close out the league stage against the currently second-placed Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on May 19.

Maybe
Main reason for #GT exit. #GT are better off retaining Rashid and Sai Sudharsan alone. #IPL2024 #GTvKKR pic.twitter.com/kiWifOxETx
