LPL 2024 | Nuwan Pradeep’s three-fer and Mohammad Nabi’s knock beat Colombo Strikers
Dambulla Sixers beat Colombo Strikers by 28 runs in Colombo. The Strikers had performed well with the ball after winning the toss, limiting Dambulla to just 123 runs while their batting faltered during the chase, failing to establish partnerships and ultimately falling short in the contest.
After a clinical victory in their previous game, the Colombo Strikers won the toss and elected to field first. In a mirror of their earlier success, their bowlers excelled by dismissing Reeza Hendricks, Nuwanidu Fernando, Kusal Perera, and Towhid Hridoy within the powerplay, leaving the score at 25/4. Concern grew when Mark Chapman fell cheaply in the eighth over, leaving Dambulla in a precarious position. However, Mohammad Nabi and Chamindu Wickramasinghe steadied Dambulla's innings, guiding them to 59/5 by the end of the 12th over. The pair built a crucial 50-run partnership and then accelerated, pushing the score to 91/5 after 15 overs. Just as they were building momentum, Binura Fernando struck again to dismiss Nabi. Subsequently, the lower order collapsed further, with Dunith Wellalge and Matheesha Pathirana restricting the Sixers to a modest total of 123 runs.
In reply, Colombo had a disastrous start as Wickramasinghe and Nuwan Pradeep quickly accounted for Angelo Perara and Muhammad Waseem within the first two overs. Their hopes suffered another blow when Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sadeera Samarawickrama fell to the bowling duo, leaving them struggling at 37/4 after the powerplay. The batting order continued to falter as Glenn Phillips and Wellalage departed before the halfway mark, with the score at a precarious 48/6 in 8.1 overs. With wickets falling steadily, the Colombo Strikers found themselves in dire straits at 95/9 after 18 overs, needing 29 runs off the last two overs. Eventually, with the dismissal of Thisara Perera, Colombo succumbed to a 28-run defeat after bundling out for 95 runs in 18.1 overs.
