PAK vs BAN | Twitter in splits as Babar carries Pak’s fielding tradition with dropped sitter at leg slip
Fielding plays a crucial role in mounting a successful attack against the opposition, yet Pakistan is often criticised for its fielding lapses. This was evident on the fourth day of the Test match between Pakistan and Bangladesh when Babar Azam failed to secure an easy catch of Mushfiqur Rahim.
Overnight batters Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das advanced the score to 329/5 in 100 overs before Naseem Shah dismissed the latter for 56. Mushfiqur and Mehidy Hasan Miraz then took Bangladesh to 346/6 in 107 overs, with the former scoring his 11th Test century. After lunch, the pair continued their dominance, building a 140-run stand and taking a 24-run lead at 472/6 in 142 overs, while Pakistan’s frustration grew, further compounded by Babar Azam’s missed chance to dismiss the well-set Mushfiqur.
Desperate for a wicket, Salman Agha delivered a flighted ball in the 142nd over around Mushfiqur's middle and leg stump. The Bangladeshi veteran misjudged the sharp inward turn as he got way too inside the line to clip it. Failing to gauge the bounce correctly, the ball brushed his gloves and headed toward the leg slip region. Meanwhile, Babar Azam was stationed there but he somehow couldn’t judge the trajectory off the rebounding cherry and made a futile dive, in an attempt of a catch. However, the former Pakistan captain was late on his reflex and failed to grasp the ball eventually. His costly drop visibly frustrated Agha and Babar was seen lying on the ground for a moment before rising with a regretful smile. He then tried to explain his error to Mohammad Rizwan with gesticulations. The incident quickly became a hot topic on social media, with many discussing Babar’s mishap.
What a blunder!
