Hughes and Seales return to Sussex as Pujara's stint comes to a close
Cheteshwar Pujara will not be back with Sussex for next year's County Championship, as the English club has chosen to release him in favour of retaining Australian player Daniel Hughes. In contrast, Caribbean fast bowler Jayden Seales is set to rejoin the club at the beginning of the 2025 season.
Sussex County Cricket Club has decided to part ways with Cheteshwar Pujara for the upcoming season, bringing his three-year contract with the team to a close. The club has opted to keep Australian top-order batter Daniel Hughes and Caribbean paceman Jayden Seales. Pujara, who played six matches in the 2024 County Championship Division II before Hughes arrived, notched up 501 runs in nine innings at an average of 62.22 and took on captaincy roles multiple times during his tenure.
Conversely, Hughes appeared in just one County Championship game for Sussex, scoring 48 runs. He will be available for all of next season's championship fixtures and will also compete in the T20 Vitality Blast. In 2024, The 35-year-old featured in a single match for Southern Brave in The Hundred, making 45 runs. Nonetheless, the New South Wales star shone in the Vitality Blast scoring 560 runs in 14 matches for Sussex with a remarkable strike rate of 170.21.
As per a report by ESPNcricinfo quoting Sussex Head Coach Paul Farbrace, he said, “ Taking over from Cheteshwar is not an easy task, but Dan has fitted in brilliantly and we are all delighted he will be back for the whole of next season.
Talking about Hughes, Farbrace added, “Dan has been top class for us on and off the field," Farbrace added. "He has brought a wealth of experience to the dressing room and has seriously helped some of our young batters with the development of their games.”
Meanwhile, Seales will return to the Club at the start of the 2025 season. Jayden Seales participated in Sussex's first seven Championship matches this season, securing 38 wickets at an average of 25.29. His standout performance came with figures of 5 for 29 against Derbyshire, contributing significantly to Sussex's commanding innings-and-124-run win, which solidified their position at the top of the second division. In addition, Seales recently took 13 wickets in the Test series against England and has scalped a total of 62 wickets in 15 Test matches for the West Indies.
