Wasim Jaffer has been appointed as the skipper of Vidarbha for the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2019-20 starting September 24 as captain Faiz Fazal suffered a hand injury. The Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) have announced a 15-member squad for the tournament on Saturday which includes pacer Umesh Yadav.

Vidarbha have been clubbed with Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Baroda, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Punjab in the Elite Group B that will commence against Delhi in Vadodara. While Fazal was expected to lead the side for the entire duration of the tournament, a minor hand injury that he suffered during the Duleep Trophy has ruled him out of it and Jaffer has been appointed as the captain of the side.

“Faiz is still undergoing treatment for the injury. We are still looking into it. Once he is cleared, he will join the side. As of today, since he hasn’t recovered, we have announced Wasim as the captain. But the injury is a minor one, not very serious,” VCA president Anand Jaiswal told Sportstar.

On being asked, if Fazal, who scored a half-century on his India ODI debut, will continue as skipper of the side when he returns, Jaiswal was non-committal. It is to be noted that Fazal has led Vidarbha to two consecutive Ranji Trophy and Irani Cup titles in the last two years and hold a kind of respect in the dressing room that is only reserved for statesman.

“We will take a call what to do then,” added Jaiswal.

Vidarbha squad: Wasim Jaffer (captain), R. Sanjay, Atharva Taide, Ganesh Satish, Rushabh Rathod, Apoorva Wankhede, Jitesh Sharma (wicketkeeper), Akshay Wadkar (wicketkeeper), Akshay Wakhare, Akshay Karnewar, Aditya Sarvate, Umesh Yadav, Yash Thakur, Darshan Nalkande, Shrikant Wagh

Coach: Chandrakant Pandit
