Enoch Nkwe retains his position as South Africa coach for England series
Interim director of the South Africa team Enoch Nkwe will continue to guide the Proteas against England at home, informed Thambie Mthembu. Mthembu talked about the vacant positions in the team’s staff and shared that the governing body doesn’t want to appoint a wrong person and get criticised.
Cricket South Africa (CSA) has decided to stick with interim director of the national side, Enoch Nkwe to guide the side against England at home. Nkwe and the staff, which was in charge when the Proteas were whitewashed in India, will continue to guide the side, hoping for a much better result this time around. Thambie Mthembu, CSA head for media and communication, confirmed the appointment as he pointed out that the series against England is an important one.
"There is no way we will go into an important series against England without having our ducks in a row. Enoch Nkwe and all the other members of his team remain in place, all except Corrie van Zyl," said Mthembu.
Even as the Proteas look to head into the England series to stabilise their rocking ship, after the retirement of their big guns, many key positions in the staff like that of director of cricket, team director, and convener of selectors lie vacant. Former South African captain Graeme Smith was considered to be a front-runner for the director of cricket position before announcing on Twitter two weeks ago that he had withdrawn because he was not confident he would have the freedom to do the job on his own terms.
While the other contender for the post, Corrie Van Zyl, who also served as the interim director of cricket, stands suspend since October 29 over a dispute between CSA and the SA Cricketers’ Association. Mthembu shared that CSA doesn’t want to be criticised for making a mistake in a hurry of filling the posts.
“What we do not want to do is to hurry and make an appointment and then be criticised if we do not appoint the right person,” Mthembu concluded.
