Mumbai Indians trade Mayank Markande for Sherfane Rutherford
Mumbai Indians have released promising spinner Mayank Markande for hard-hitting West Indies teenager Sherfane Rutherford who played for Delhi Capitals. Markande had a decent 2018 season with Mumbai but only managed one wicket in three outings with the 2019 champions earlier this year.
Promising youngster Mayank Markande was tipped for big things as he made an amazing start to his IPL career making his debut with Mumbai Indians in the 2018 edition of the tournament. The teenager finished as Mumbai's finished third-highest wicket-taker, with 15 dismissals in 14 matches. However, Markande played only three matches for Mumbai in IPL 2019 where He picked up just one solitary wicket as Rohit Sharma & Co. opted to go with the in-form Rahul Chahar.
As a result of that, Markande has now been allowed to depart to Delhi Capitals as highly-rated West Indies cricketer Sherfane Rutherford comes the other way. Mayank will join Amit Mishra, Sandeep Lamichhane and Rahul Tewatia to form a legspinning quartet for Capitals to choose from.
"We wish Mayank the very best for his future. He is a brilliant talent and we were fortunate to have spotted and nurtured him early. It is a difficult decision for us, but we are releasing him for better cricketing prospects and know that he is on the cusp of emerging as yet another shining star of Indian cricket. He will always be a part of the Mumbai Indians family," Akash Ambani, the owner of Mumbai Indians, was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
Meanwhile, Aakash offered some positive words for the incoming Rutherford who showed glimpses of his talent with the Delhi-based outfit this season. The Windies youngster scored 73 runs and picked up one wicket IPL 2019. However, Rutherford enjoyed an impressive CPL season last year as where he bagged 171 runs in eight games at an average of 34.20.
"I am excited to welcome the talented Sherfane into our family. He has impressed us with his all-round skills and match-winning attitude. His exploits across the world at such an early stage of his career have been impressive and we believe he finds his home at MI," added Ambani.
