VIDEO | MS Dhoni runs two Australian batsmen out on ONE ball
MS Dhoni’s acumen behind the stumps is the stuff of legend even though he is still not done with his illustrious career. However, today, he did something that he hasn’t done in over 500 matches of international cricket - run out two batsmen on a single delivery, even if only one was given out.
On the second ball of the 16th over, Umesh Yadav bowled a full ball across the sticks and Peter Handscomb hopped it across to run a couple. It was never there, but two supremely athletic cricketers thought they would manage to pull it off. In the process, they messed it up. Krunal Pandya was alive to the danger at deep mid-wicket and instantly made a brilliant throw to wicket-keeper’s end.
For the reason only known to them, Handscomb and D’Arcy Short didn’t take the second run pursuit seriously and it seemed like they converged in the middle for a mid-pitch handshake. Eventually, when Short decided to go for the run, it ended up creating a drama in the middle.
Dhoni collected the ball safely and disturbed the sticks at the batter's end. However, he was not sure about the batsmen’s whereabouts and just as a matter of caution, he threw it to the other end where Yadav was standing. The former Indian skipper asked him to run the other batsman out, and after the pacer obliged him with that, the Indians seemed relaxed for a bit as it was only a matter of time one would go back to the hut.
Short was declared out for that as of course, no double play is allowed.
