Mashrafe Mortaza has been an inspirational captain for Bangladesh and not the one to ask for anything less than the best from his players. Today, when Soumya Sarkar didn’t position himself in the position Mortaza wanted him to be, the Bangladesh skipper blasted him for not obeying his instructions.

“Never mess with a pacer’s ego, it will come back to haunt you later” - some former pacer had said this long back and it couldn’t have been fit in a better way than this. And if the pacer happened to be your skipper, then mess things up at your own peril. Soumya Sarkar had failed to go by the classic theory of the sport, making Dunedin atmosphere a heated one.

Batting first, New Zealand were on 42/1 in 8 overs with Henry Nicholls and Martin Guptill at the crease. Thinking the mid-on was in deep, the Bangladeshi skipper bowled a juicy length ball in an attempt to lure the batsman to play the long hoick. He was right in a sense given Guptill has that habit of dislodging the length ball a bit straighter and very rarely, he goes over midwicket or square leg.

However, his hopes went in vain as Sarkar had forgotten to go to deep and was standing at mid-on. Guptill played a long hoick and had there been a fielder at the edge of the circle, it was a sure dismissal. Seeing that, Mortaza couldn’t control his anger and started blasting Sarkar in Bengali, which could be translated as “Why didn’t you go to deep, stupid? Didn’t I tell you to do that?”

While Sarkar’s voice was not captured in the stump mic, Mortaza started again, blasting Sarkar for being inside the circle, abusing him in Bengali.
