Shikhar Dhawan included in India A squad for final two South Africa A one-dayers
Shikhar Dhawan has been added to the India A squad, to be led by Shreyas Iyer, for the final two one-dayers against South Africa A. The selection committee has also confirmed that all-rounder Vijay Shankar has been ruled out of the remainder of the series after suffering a thumb fracture.
After suffering a thumb injury in the match against Australia in the World Cup, Dhawan was ruled out from the World Cup altogether but returned to competitive cricket in the limited-overs in West Indies. The Delhi left-handed batsman played all three T20Is in the Windies series but failed to muster enough momentum, aggregating only 27 runs while the two ODIs too brought only 38 runs.
He has been named in India's 15-member T20I squad for the forthcoming home series against South Africa and with Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul also offering opening options, his chances might depend on his performance in the A series.
Meanwhile, Vijay Shankar, who was ruled out from the World Cup with an injury, faces another setback as he looks to force his way back into national reckoning. He was picked as India's first-choice No.4 for the World Cup, Vijay lost his place to KL Rahul in the middle-order after the latter's century against Bangladesh in the warm-up game and then a toe injury ended his World Cup campaign. Further, he wasn't picked for the tour of West Indies.
