WI vs IND | Focus is to go out there and keep doing what works for me, says Mayank Agarwal
Mayank Agarwal has revealed that he is not delving much on the challenges that conditions in the Caribbean offer or his exclusion from the ODI squad but is focused on performing well when given the chance. He also discussed his debut last year and the experience of being called up for the World Cup.
After scoring more than 1,000 runs in a single month in domestic cricket which ultimately saw him end as the Ranji Trophy’s leading run-getter in the 2017-18 season, Mayank Agarwal was handed his long-awaited Test debut last year in the Boxing Day Test against Australia. Filling in for the injured Prithvi Shaw, the opener scored two half-centuries in the couple of matches he played and drove India to a maiden series victory in red-ball cricket Down Under.
"There was immense support from the dressing room. Something that motivated me was Virat talking in the huddle before the Test and reminding me that bigger the stage, greater the opportunity to contribute and showcase my talent. They were all backing me and reminding me that I was scoring plenty of runs, so I didn't have to be changing anything about my game," the 28-year-old told Cricbuzz.
However, he could not get into the team even though he continued performing at the highest level before receiving another bolt from the blue earlier this year. With Vijay Shankar sustaining an injury in practice during the World Cup, an unexpecting Mayank Agarwal was asked to replace him in England ahead of other more experienced campaigners in the wait for the call.
"I was just going about the preparations in the India A camp for the West Indies tour. When I was there, they communicated very clearly about what was expected of me and why I was the one called up. The whole experience was fantastic. To be in the World Cup team and to experience something like that was tremendous. Everyone was motivated and working hard. The intensity in the camp was unbelievable," Agarwal says.
He has not represented the country ever since he played the last two matches of the series against Australia last year and was again denied his chance recently when he was left out of the ODI squad against the West Indies. However, Agarwal says he does not delve much into such off-field issues.
“I don't think much about selection. My focus is to go out there, perform well and keep doing what works for me. I had a talk with Prasad Sir about the ODI team selection for the Windies tour but I don't want to delve into the details," Agarwal stated.
He is most likely to be placed in the mix of things in the Test series in the Carribean though, expected to open the innings along with his best friend since childhood, KL Rahul. West Indies offers some of the most daunting challenges to opening batsman but the Karnataka man is quietly assured of his abilities.
"I am not too worried about the stats. Different conditions offer different challenges and as professional cricketers we are expected to adjust accordingly. There was a lot to learn for me after the Australian series and I have been constantly honing my skills. I just look to apply the work I have done in the background. I don't change too much of my preparations based on conditions. I stick to my game plan and take it ball by ball. I don't talk on my goals or my achievements. I prefer to keep those to myself," he concluded.
