Want to be someone who is very flexible batting at any number, claims Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer has said he wants to be open to bat wherever the team needs him to instead of restricting himself to batting at the much scrutinized upon number four batting spot. He went on to laud the team for the way it has been performing and hoped for a rain free match against the West Indies.
After a successful IPL season in which he led his side Delhi Capitals to their first playoff in seven years, Shreyas Iyer continued with his good touch for the India ‘A’ side which has helped him earn a spot in the first senior squad. His record in the six ODIs he has played has been great, scoring at an average of 42 including a couple of half centuries.
The 24 year old is now been looked upon as a potential pick for the much debated upon number four spot in the team. In the recent few months, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Dinesh Karthik and Vijay Shankar have all been given a chance to claim the position but none managed to impress enough. Over the next two ODIs against the Windies, Iyer is likely to be given a crack at the spot but he wants to remain open to opportunities.
"Personally, I am not thinking about batting only at No.4. I want to be someone who is very flexible batting at any number or if you go into any situation you should be able to grab that opportunity and make the best use of it," Shreyas Iyer said, reported ESPNCricinfo.
India clean swept the Carribean team 3-0 in the recently concluded T20 series to carry on its good form from the World Cup, where it had finished the league stage at the top.
"The way the team is playing currently, it's totally amazing. If one doesn't perform, the next one raises his hand and he takes the responsibility to take the team through and this is what has been happening throughout the year," Iyer said of the team’s remarkable performances.
The first ODI saw only 13 overs being played before rain put an end to the match. The weather has not improved much since, after it again started pouring on Saturday and disrupted India’s training session in Port-of-Spain. Iyer, however, is already well accustomed to the conditions, having scored 187 runs in four innings for India ‘A’ in the one day series, ending it as the third highest run-scorer.
"It's going to be another two opportunities for me to make the best use of it. Hopefully this also doesn't rain off. We are hardly getting any net practice. I am eager to go out there and carry forward the momentum which I got from my India A matches. Looking forward to a good series finish," Iyer concluded.
