Kiran More has stated that MS Dhoni’s valiant knock against Royal Challengers Bangalore brought back the memories of 2006. Dhoni played his career-best innings of 84 from 48 deliveries in the Indian Premier League to steer his side to the verge of an improbable victory but fell short by a whisker.

Former national selector Kiran More was left nostalgic after witnessing Dhoni’s fighting knock of 84 against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday. In 2004, the then chief national selector More backed Dhoni’s selection for the tour of Bangladesh. Former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly too had to take the final call, which he took in the favour of Ranchi-lad and the results were there for everyone to see.

With the Chennai Super Kings skipper being in the twilight of his career, a fiery innings, which is his trademark, has become a rarity. But on Sunday, Dhoni was in no mood to spare any bowler and exploited the batting-friendly conditions of Chinnaswamy while squeezing 24 runs off the first five deliveries of the final over. However, he missed out on the last ball to endure a heart-breaking defeat by a solitary run. His innings reminded More of his heyday, where Dhoni used to finish matches in a similar fashion. More also said that age is just a number for a player like Dhoni, and at 37 his fitness is just outstanding.

“Oh! He was brilliant. It was an outstanding innings and only goes to show age is never a criteria. Dhoni is in top form and age is just a number. Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid all played till late in their career and with distinction,” More said, reported IANS.

“The innings took me back to 2006 and maybe, around that time when a young Dhoni took the scene by storm,” More said.

Dhoni’s IPL form has been staggering, amassing 314 runs at 104.66 and More is confident that his performance will be crucial for India in the upcoming World Cup in England and Wales.

“He will definitely be a vital cog for the Indian team at the World Cup,” he said.

CSK are currently the table-toppers and their berth in the play-offs will almost be certain if they manage to win one game out of the four remaining matches.
