Asia Cup | Ravi Shastri is impressed by Rohit Sharma’s calming influence as captain
Praising the stand-in skipper Rohit Sharma, Ravi Shastri has stated that he has a calming influence which also seeps into his captaincy and makes him a cool captain. India defeated Bangladesh in a nail-biting final of the Asia Cup to claim the Asia Cup trophy second time in a row.
Virat Kohli was rested for the Asia cup to take off the heavy workload on the skipper and Rohit Sharma was made the stand-in skipper who has managed to impress the head coach Ravi Shastri. Rohit won all the five matches that he led in the tournament and with the bat too Rohit did not disappoint and amassed 317 runs only behind the highest scorer and his opening partner - Shikhar Dhawan.
“Rohit was a calming influence and it showed in his captaincy. To keep his intensity going even after the start they (Bangladesh) had, showed he was really cool in every aspect of captaincy, the bowling changes he made were really good, to concede just around 100 runs in the last 30 overs, I thought it was brilliant,” said Shastri as reported by PTI.
“I liked the intensity with which we played, we were a bit flat against Hong Kong in the first match, but pulled up afterward. The biggest plus was the fielding, game after game, we saved around 30-35 runs in these oppressive conditions.”
Ravi Shastri, who represented India in 80 test matches, also had words of praise for his bowlers. Out of six matches that the Indian team played in the Asia Cup, Indian bowlers bowled the opposition out three times and in the way bagged 53 out of the 60 wickets of the opponents.
“We took wickets consistently and during the middle-overs, the bowlers were outstanding, we bowled well with the new ball in tough conditions and then the spinners came to the party.”
