Only regret will be not winning a series in India, says Rangana Herath
40-year old Sri Lankan spinner, Rangana Herath, who is set to retire after Sri Lanka 's Test against England declared that the only regret in his career was not winning a series in India. Herath will retire after having played a total of 142 Test matches for Sri Lanka in which he picked 430 wickets.
Sri Lankan veteran, Rangana Herath, has enjoyed a long and distinguished career with the national team. Herath largely played the second-fiddle to the great Muttiah Muralitharan but post the latter’s retirement in 2010, Herath has been the go-to spinner for the Lankans in the longer format of the game. However, the 40-year old announced that he was set to retire after the first Test against England at Galle.
In a recent interview with Hindustan Times, Herath was asked if he had any regrets when it came to his career, to which he replied, “Not winning in India. I have been part of the side when we won all over the world, but not winning in India was a bitter pill to swallow. We had a good chance in Ahmedabad in 2009. We took a massive first-innings lead of 350 runs, but Sachin Tendulkar and Gautam Gambhir scored hundreds in the second innings and saved the game. should have won that.”
Herath will end his career as one of the most successful bowlers that the subcontinent nation has ever produced. Herath became the third Sri Lankan bowler to take 300 wickets in Test cricket history after Muttiah Muralitharan and Chaminda Vaas. In 2016, the spinner became only the third bowler in history to take five-wicket hauls against all Test-playing nations followed by which he became the second Sri Lankan bowler to take 400 test wickets.
