Video | ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle smashes the ball well into space against Mumbai Indians
Revenge is a dish best served cold, but KXIP superstar Chris Gayle prefers to serve it hot we guess and his recent performances with the bat a sound reminder to all the teams that wrote him off in the auction. Gayle sent a Mitchell McClenaghan delivery out of the stadium in tonight’s encounter.
The power-hitting West Indian players and the Indian Premier League have been a match made in heaven ever since the first edition of the tournament back in 2008. The likes of Dwayne Bravo, Darren Smith, Lendl Simmons and the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle have been a hit on the Indian soil.
But the might Gayle was almost on the brink of missing out on this year’s IPL as no team opted to buy him out at his base price of Rs. 2 crores at the auction held in January. Virender Sehwag and team took the risk to bid for the left-handed opener at the dying stage of the auction and it has turned out to be a smart move by the former Indian batsman.
Gayle has looked in fine form throughout this tournament where he also managed to notch a century against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Kings XI Punjab went into tonight’s match with the struggling Mumbai Indians as favorites and got off to a good start with openers KL Rahul and Gayle looking in fine touch.
They were 38-0 after five overs, with the last over of the powerplay left to go. Sharma opted to let Mitchell McClenaghan bowl the sixth over with the Windies batsman on strike. But the ‘Universe Boss’ latched on to a rather short-delivery which he sent all the way over the stadium’s roof in Indore. The entire stadium erupted with excitement as they seen the ball soar over the stadium all the way to space. Universe Boss indeed!
