Ramesh Powar in fray again as India Women's head coach selection process gets sterner
After Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana requested BCCI to give an extension to Ramesh Powar, the latter has finally decided to apply for it. Apart from Powar, Herschelle Gibbs, Owais Shah, Dimitri Mascarenhas, and Manoj Prabhakar are the others to have confirmed sending in their applications.
Diana Edulji insisted that Ramesh Powar should be given an extension as Harmanpreet and Mandhana - two senior members of the team - have been very happy with the way Powar operated during his tenure and their choices should be respected. But, Rai went against her idea and formed an ad-hoc committee comprising Kapil Dev, Anshuman Gaekwad and Shanta Rangaswamy to conduct fresh interviews on December 20. While Herschelle Gibbs, Owais Shah and Manoj Prabhakar have applied for the job already, Powar has now decided to throw his hat into the ring.
“After seeing Harman and Smriti's backing, I've decided to re-apply. Rather, I felt it was my duty to apply as I did not want to disappoint them if they believe in this kind of coaching. Rest is, obviously, in BCCI's hands. In fact, a lot of girls have spoken good for me and I didn't feel like letting them down," Powar told Cricbuzz.
After a terrible Asia Cup campaign under Tushar Arothe, India had a very good run under Powar, who oversaw the team blanking Sri Lanka 4-0, Australia A 3-0, and also went on to remain unbeaten in Group B to top their table at the Women’s World T20. Powar believes that the good work that he had done shouldn’t be wasted and he should work on those things to make a good team for the future.
"I hope we can carry forward all the good work we've done so far. Hopefully, that won't go waste. Hopefully, we can build on all the positive cricket we've played and the hard work we've put in these three months as we build for the future."
His conflict with Mithali Raj made national headlines when the latter was dropped from the team in order to keep the winning combination intact. That hurt Mithali, who laid her anguish bare in an email to BCCI’s CEO Rahul Johri and GM Syed Saba Karim, pointing out her issues with Powar and Edulji. Powar also made sure that his letter was equally scathing against the ODI skipper. However, Powar has now stated that he is ready to work with Mithali for the betterment of the sport.
"I'm not reading into it at all. I'm looking at a team, 15 players and not any individual. It's for the betterment of the women's team, and I'll do whatever it takes. Simple as that," he added.
