India vs England | Virat Kohli comes closest to Sachin Tendulkar, reckons Saqlain Mushtaq
Saqlain Mushtaq has suggested that amongst all modern-day cricketers, only Virat Kohli comes closest to the level and charisma of Sachin Tendulkar. The Pakistani spin legend has also added that he was heavily impressed by the batch of Indian pace bowlers that have performed well in England.
Two games into the Test series against England, India found themselves trailing the home team by a margin of 2-0. The second loss at Lord’s was the biggest loss that the Indian team endured since 29-year old Virat Kohli took the reins of the Test team from MS Dhoni. With everything against them heading into the crucial third Test at Trent Bridge, Ravi Shastri’s boys produced one of the most stunning displays of Test cricket the Indian team has performed on foreign soil.
While the Indian team performed well as a unit, it was no surprise that Kohli was once again a standout performer in the ongoing series. With scores of 97 & 103, Kohli was awarded the man of the match award as India reduced the gap to one point in the series with two more matches left to play.
It’s not the first time that Kohli has stepped in to save the Indian team, and it certainly won’t be the last. Perhaps this is why, former Pakistan cricketer - Saqlain Mushtaq likened the Indian skipper to cricketing legend, Sachin Tendulkar in a recent interview. Mushtaq added that it was due to Kohli’s form with the bat that the other Indian batsman also performed at Trent Bridge.
“As a batsman, Sachin was a very big player. I cannot compare (two eras) but today Virat is the only one who comes close. We were talking amongst the English support staff about how he played at Trent Bridge. In this third Test alone, Jimmy Anderson beat his outside edge 40 times, and yet he played the next ball with so much confidence. Virat plays ball by ball, run by run and session by session. He has a tremendous hunger for runs and victory. When you have someone hungry like that, he can do anything to satisfy his hunger.
“The way Virat is scoring runs, it is ominous for England. During the first Test, I saw a signboard that said it is ‘England versus Virat Kohli’. If you take him out of the equation, it will be very easy for England. If you see from a coaching point of view, it is because of him the others have scored runs whilst batting with him. Having a world class batsman like Virat in your team certainly boosts the entire batting line-up,” Mushtaq told PTI.
Mushtaq, who represented Pakistan in 49 Tests, was also full of praise for the present batch of Indian pace bowlers who have caused South African and English batsmen a lot of trouble in the last six Test matches that India played.
“If you look at the statistics from the first three Tests, India’s pacers have bowled quicker than English pacers. When did that last happen? The way they walk, and present themselves, the way they bowl fast and move the ball, you look at the Indian pacers and think that they are proper fast bowlers.
“They have a lot of physical strength, and it shows in their walking and running. It signals that they have put in the proper hard work to become fast bowlers at this level and they appear professional in every sense of the word,” Mushtaq added.
