India vs England | Always felt confident despite lack of runs in past few months, claims Cheteshwar Pujara
Indian Test batsman Cheteshwar Pujara has claimed that he was always confident of performing well eventually despite lack of runs in the past few months. Pujara added that the County stint earlier this year helped him in a lot of ways despite having a poor season with Yorkshire.
As India marched towards a victory on the fourth day of the third Test against England at Trent Bridge, there was always a chance to forget small contributions that made a difference. Pujara’s 208-ball 72, scored through the second evening and third morning that helped India put up a mammoth target of 521 for the hosts, was one of those.
Pujara, who has been in and out of the Indian side lately, insisted that he was always confident even though the runs were not coming. He revealed that the County challenge helped him in a lot of ways as he was performing well in the nets on a consistent basis. He knew that a big knock was on its way and it was just a matter of time.
“I didn’t score too many runs in County cricket for Yorkshire but I was playing on challenging pitches. I always felt that I was batting well especially in the nets. The timing was spot on and I believed a big one was on the way. The way I batted in this innings, I felt that whatever I was working on in the nets, came along," Pujara was quoted as saying by TOI.
“Playing county cricket did help me. In the last few
Pujara, who is not the most flamboyant of the lot, further stated that every player has his own style of play when asked about his strike-rate.
“We need to trust out technique and every player has a different one. Every player has his own style and it’s important to believe in it. We just need to play the way we know as a batsman,” he added.
However, he admitted that he was under pressure before scoring the half-century in the second innings. He felt that as a team, India had not scored many runs in the first two Tests and it was high time to tighten the laces.
“Yes, there is pressure especially when you have not scored too many runs. Even as a batting unit before this Test match, collectively we had not scored too many runs. It was important for us to change that in this Test,” Pujara said.
