Glenn McGrath believes that veteran pacer Ishant Sharma needs to find a role, in the Indian cricket team, that suits his style of bowling if he wants to pick more wickets in the future. McGrath added that a month and a half month at Sussex under Jason Gillespie has helped Ishant evolve as a bowler.

Ishant showed up big time in the first Test at Edgbaston as he picked up six wickets, which included a five-wicket haul in the second innings. Despite the narrow 31-run loss, there were a lot of positives to take from the game for the visitors as the Indian bowlers apart from Ishant, also put in an impressive display in the series opener.

And Australian bowling legend, Glenn McGrath who picked up 563 wickets in Test cricket, revealed that Ishant proved himself in the first Test with figures of 5/51. However, McGrath added that the 29-year old needed to find a suitable role for himself in the star-studded Indian squad if he looked to pick up more wickets for the rest of the series.

"When Ishant started off, he took the world by storm bowling good pace. He is probably not bowling at the same pace. But he is much more experienced now with good control. The Edgbaston Test showed that Ishant has started adapting a bit more.

"I guess a lot of pitches in India are tough to play on. Probably, he didn't bowl that many spells. May be, he has been used more as a workhorse rather than an attacking bowler. I think he needs to find in what role he fits in," McGrath told PTI sources on the sidelines of fast bowlers' camp organised by Haryana Cricket Association and MRF Pace Foundation.

Sharma, who was in England with county side - Sussex ever since he was overlooked for this year’s IPL, was under the tutelage of former Australian pacer Jason Gillespie for the last two months or so. And McGrath believed that Gillespie’s coaching certainly helped Ishant evolve as a bowler ahead of the second Test at Lord’s.

"If you are bowling same lengths in India, Australia and England, you can't be successful. In England, where the ball swings, you have got to be a bit fuller, so his stint at Sussex did him a world of good.

"My good mate Jason Gillespie has done incredible work as a coach. I played county in 2000 and 2004 and learnt a lot to bowl in English conditions," McGrath added.
