Watch | Australia do an India; botch up DRS review
India's problems with DRS in the ongoing series against Australia have been well documented but now it appears that Australia are having their own troubles as well. The visitors used up both their reviews and later were unable to take one for a Vijay appeal that would have sent the Indian packing.
The incident occurred in the 59th over of the Indian innings, when Steve O’Keefe was bowling to Cheteshwar Pujara and the Indian was wrapped on the pads by a ball that went straight on after pitching.
Following a confident appeal from the Aussies, which was turned down by the on-field umpire, the visitors went upstairs for a review. The third umpire, however, decided that the ball had deflected off the bat and onto Pujara’s pad. Replay’s suggested that the ball had hit both bat and pad at the same time, and the decision could have gone either way.
Moreover, this meant that Australia lost their second and final review and this was something that would come back to haunt them later in the session when Nathan Lyon was bowling to Murali Vijay. Lyon’s delivery spun sharply, before taking the inside edge of Vijay’s bat and looping up for a simple catch to the fielder at short-leg. Another confident appeal was turned down by the umpire, but this time, Australia were in no position to challenge after losing both their reviews. Replays confirmed the edge and Australia were once again, left to rue the on-field umpire’s decision.
