Sri Lanka have been dealt another blow in their ongoing series against India as Chamara Kapugedara has been ruled out of the remaining matches with a back injury. Subsequently, Lasith Malinga will lead the home side in the fourth ODI on Thursday, before Upul Tharanga returns for the final ODI.

There seems to be no light at the end of the tunnel for Sri Lanka as things just keep going from bad to worse for the once formidable side. As if their ongoing miserable run of form wasn’t enough, they have been dealt another blow as their stand-in skipper Kapugedara has been ruled out of the remainder of the series with a back injury. In his absence, Lasith Malinga will step to lead the side for the fourth ODI that is to be played tomorrow. However, Upul Tharanga will return to lead the side for the fifth ODI after serving a two match suspension for a slow over rate in the second ODI.

Moreover, Malinga’s appointment is the fifth captaincy change to the Sri Lankan side in the last seven competitive matches and is indicative of the island nation's plight in the recent past. But neither of the appointed skippers have managed to turn around the fortunes of the side as the former World Champions suffered a shock exit in the group stages of the Champions Trophy and also went down to lower-ranked Zimbabwe. Moreover, the hosts have failed to win a single game of the ongoing series against India as Virat Kohli and his side swept the preceding Test series 3-0 and also clinched the 5-match series with a win in the third ODI on Sunday.
