Mary Kom assured of seventh Boxing World Championship medal
Indian boxer Mary Kom has reached the semifinals at the Boxing World Championship in the 48 kg weight category and thus has secured at least a bronze at the Championships. The last time she had won a medal was back in 2010 when she had bagged her fifth gold medal at the World Championship.
Mary Kom reserved India’s first medal at the ongoing Boxing World Championship after defeating her Chinese opponent Wu Yu in a unanimous verdict in a Quarterfinal match of the 48 kg category. She already has five gold medals and a silver to her name at the Boxing World Championship.
On the other hand, young Manisha Maun lost her quarterfinal match to Stoyka Petrova in a split verdict in the 54 kg category. Petrova is the top seed in the 54 kg category at the World Championship. Maun had a very good Championship where she defeated a couple of strong opponents in a former World Champion and a World Championship medallist before losing the Quarterfinal match.
The match involving Mary Kom and her Chinese opponent Wu Yu was a straightforward one where the former dominated throughout the match and did not allow Yu to get a hit at her easily. Thus Mary Kom managed an easy win by a unanimous verdict. Kom will face North Korea’s Hyang Mi Kim in the semi-finals.
