Featherweight boxer Sonia Lather defeated Aizhan Khojabekova of Kazakhstan in the semi-final of the 2016 Women's World Boxing Championship at Astana on Thursday to enter the final. With the win, Sonia stands just one win away from ending India’s six-year-old gold medal drought at the event.

Former Asian silver-medallist Sonia Lather was the lone Indian representative in the semi-finals that were held on Thursday, and she assured herself of at least a silver medal by winning the semi-final bout by unanimous decision of the judges. The Indian outpunched her Kazakhstan opponent in the first three rounds and scored enough points before running out of steam in the last round. Although she huffed and puffed her way in the fourth and final round, the points she scored in the first three rounds helped her clinch a spot in the all-important final.

Sonia will face Italy’s Alessia Mesiano in the final of the Women's World Boxing Championship as she hopes to end India’s six-year-old gold drought at the event. It was 2012 Olympics bronze medallist MC Mary Kom who had won India’s last gold at the championship back in 2010.
