Denmark Open | Kidambi Srikanth salvages pride for India after PV Sindhu exit
Kidambi Srikanth got the better of Hans-Kristian Vittinghus by a margin of 21-16, 21-10 to enter the second round of the Denmark Open tournament. Meanwhile, Sameer Verma also moved to the next round in the men's singles event by beating China's Shi Yuqi 21-17, 21-18 in 44 minutes.
Denmark Open was the tournament to shine for Srikanth last year as he became the first Indian male star to win the tournament, and he couldn’t wait for a bigger inspiration after the terrible 2018 that he has had. In the first match of the tournament, he went head-to-head against Hans-Kristian Solberg Vittinghus of Denmark and the match was just a formality before the tough draw that awaits him.
However, the beginning was not what the eventual scoreline suggests. Vittinghus gave fight from the very beginning and even had an 8-6 lead over the Indian. But, from that point on, Srikanth decided to pull up his socks and entered the break at 11-10. The post-mid-interval game was a cakewalk for the Hyderabadi as he secured points for fun and registered a 21-16 win.
In the second game, however, Srikanth didn’t let the momentum slip from his hands even for a minute and complete dominance, went on to secure the game 21-10 and won the game without breaking a sweat.
While Srikanth’s win was expected, Sameer Verma created a huge upset by moving to the next round in the men's singles event by beating China's Shi Yuqi 21-17, 21-18 in 44 minutes. Yuqi was nowhere close to what he can do on a badminton court, and Verma took the benefit of the same to register one of the sweetest victories of his career.
Earlier, Saina Nehwal endured a nervy start as she fought her way to a three-set thriller against Hong Kong’s Ngan Yi Cheung in the opening round of the tournament. But Asian Games silver medalist PV Sindhu was knocked out in the first round at the hands of American Beiwen Zhang.
