Asian Athletics Championships | Swapna Barman, mixed relay team bag silver on Day 3
Heptathlete Swapna Barman won a silver medal for India on the third day of the ongoing 23rd Asian Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar on Tuesday. The 4X400 mixed relay team also won a silver medal while Sanjivani Jadhav finished third in the women’s 10,000m final on yesterday.
The medal’s tally for the Indian contingent at the Asian Athletics Championships has now moved up to 13. Defending Asian champion in heptathlon Barman was defeated by Ekaterina Vornina of Uzbekistan who scored 6198 points. Barman scored 5993 points to finish as the second best all-rounder among the female athletes in Asia.
“I’m not very happy, I’m not pleased with my javelin throw result. My preparations were not good, I’m an injury queen, you know…had a problem with my ankle,” Barman said after her event.
The Indian mixed relay team of Muhammed Anas, M. R. Poovamma, V.K. Vismaya and Arokia Rajiv secured the second silver medal of the day in 4X400m relay with a timing of 3:16.47s. The team missed Hima Das who had back pain during the 400m heats and had to pull out of the event.
In the 4X100m relay, the Indian women’s team of Archana Suseendran, V. Revathi, K. Ranga and Dutee Chand finished fourth as a fumble in the exchange of baton resulted in them missing out on a bronze medal.
Sanjeevani went on to add a medal to India’s tally in the last event of the day as she claimed a bronze in the women’s 10,000m event. She clocked her personal best of 32:44.96 in the final to finish third in the long distance running event.
Parul Chaudhary finished fifth in the 3000m steeplechase while Ajay Kumar Saroj made it to the men’s 1500m final. On the other hand, after missing out on a medal in the 100m race, Chand qualified for the finals of 200m with a timing of 23.33s in the heats.
