Vikas Krishan: If I am able to defeat (Melikuziev) him, I will return home with a gold
Middleweight boxer Vikas Krishan, who is one win away from securing a medal in the Rio Olympics, on Saturday promised to return with a gold medal, if he defeats his tough quarter-final opponent. Vikas Krishan will face Uzbekistan’s Bektemir Melikuziev on August 16.
Only a quarterfinal victory stands between Vikas Krishan and a medal at Rio Olympics. But, if he manages to defeat Uzbekistan’s Bektemir Melikuziev, then Vikas Krishan wants nothing less than a gold medal.
“He (Melikuziev) is the toughest in the group. Mark my words, if I am able to defeat him, I will return home with a gold. I won't take a silver or bronze. I will return empty-handed or the gold medal. Gold is assured if I get past him,” Vikas Krishan told PTI.
Bektemir Melikuziev had won a silver medal at the 2015 Doha World Championship and had also defeated Krishan at Asian Championship last year.
"I was not in form then (at Asian Championships), while he was at his peak. I've picked my rhythm now,” Krishan explained about the defeat in Asia championships.
With just two days left for the bout, the 24-year-old desires to remain tension-free before the fight and wants to plan his strategy only on Monday evening.
“I will just relax for two nights and on the eve of the bout will think of my strategy. I just want to remain tension free and enjoy with my friends,” Vikas Krishan said.
