PKL 2019 | Knew what this team is capable of, says Jasveer Singh
After becoming the sixth team to qualify for the playoffs, UP Yoddha coach Jasveer Singh has said that despite the defeats at the start of the league, he never doubted the players’ capabilities. Raider Monu Goyat has expressed his happiness after a super 10 in his comeback game against Dabang Delhi.
As Delhi went into the game with a second string side, UP Yoddha managed to get the better of them quite easily. The team from Uttar Pradesh have made it to the playoffs after they won the match last evening by 50-33 in Greater Noida. UP didn’t have a great start to the league but they gained their form back and now are in the next round for the third time in three seasons.
UP’s chief coach Jasveer Singh explained about his thought process at the start of the league when his players were not in great form and they were losing matches by big margins.
“The team wasn’t doing too well at the start due to injuries. But we knew what the capability of this team was, so we weren’t deterred by those initial losses. However, we lost those matches by quite a big margin, which was, obviously, disappointing. But at no point did I doubt this team,” Jasveer told reporters.
“We have three matches left and we would like to rotate our squad to give a few opportunities to our bench players. The coming matches after that will be knockout matches so we would like to test our bench ahead of that.”
Monu Goyat came back on to the mat after missing out a few games and he managed to get a super 10. He was the star for the home team in the last game apart from the two defenders Nitesh Kumar and Sumit who also got to their respective high 5s. Goyat was happy with his performance and also expressed that he was delighted with the team making it to the playoffs.
“First of all, I am happy that we have reached the playoffs. That was our main aim while playing this match. Secondly, it does feel good to score a Super 10 because I am playing after a long time and I was able to give a good performance,” said Goyat.
As UP have already qualified for the next round and have nothing more to achieve, we might just see the team making a few changes in their playing 7. They will play three more games at home – Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, and Jasveer is of the opinion that many players, who have not played in the league till now, also deserve a chance.
“The others in the team are pretty good too and I think they deserve a chance to show what they have. In case we need them in the coming matches, we will know how to use them,” Jasveer signed off.
