Pakistan got off to their first victory in the 2024 T20 World Cup in three matches as they bounced back against Canada with a seven-wicket win. Mohammad Amir’s stellar bowling coupled with other pacers reduced Canada to 106 before Rizwan and Babar’s 63-run stand shone brightly on American shores.

CAN: 106/7 [ Johnson: 52, Sana: 13*; Amir: 4-0-13-2] lost to PAK: 107/3  [Rizwan: 53* Babar: 33; Dillon Heyliger: 4-0-18-2] by seven wickets.

Winning the toss and electing to field first, Shaheen Afridi failed to find the right areas as he conceded 15 runs off the opening over. However, Mohammad Amir brought his experience into play and castled Navneet Dhaliwal in the third over to draw first blood. The switch of ends worked for Shaheen as he ended Pargat Singh’s stay, summing up a 30-run powerplay. Canada could add 25 runs in the next four overs for the loss of three more wickets with Haris Rauf enforcing a double blow in the tenth over. While Imad Wasim checked the opposition batters from one end, the usage of seamers from the other end paid dividends as Canada saw themselves reeling at 85/6 in 16 overs. Subsequently, Amir concluded Saad Bin Zafar’s struggle (21-ball 11) before the tail wagged till the end to pile up 106 runs on board.

Similar to their opposition, Pakistan got off to a slow start, scoring 28 runs inside the powerplay for the loss of Saim Ayub. Soon, Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan opted for a measured approach with occasional boundaries and stitched a fifty-run second wicket stand in the 13th over with the scoreboard reflecting 76/1. With the pair eyeing a quick chase, the Pakistan skipper ended up caught behind for run-a-ball 33 in an attempt of a funky stroke in the 15th over. The dismissal made way for Fakhar Zaman who accompanied Rizwan to his half-century as Pakistan cruised past the 100-run mark in the 17th over. With four runs needed off the last three overs, the southpaw threw away his wicket before Usman Khan strolled in and ran a double to earn a Pakistan victory with seven wickets and 15 balls in hand.
